"Should we use Grafana or Datadog?" is one of the most common questions we hear from engineering leaders, usually after a Datadog renewal quote or after self-hosted Prometheus and Grafana became too much work.

This Grafana vs Datadog comparison is written from hands-on experience. Crozaint works with both, and builds its observability practice primarily on Grafana Cloud. We will be transparent about the trade-offs.

What is Datadog?

Datadog is a SaaS monitoring and security platform covering infrastructure monitoring, APM, log management, real user monitoring, synthetics, security and more. It uses a proprietary agent (with OpenTelemetry support) and a large integration catalogue. Its strength is a unified, polished experience that works quickly.

What is Grafana Cloud?

Grafana Cloud is Grafana Labs' managed observability platform. It combines Grafana for visualisation with Mimir (metrics), Loki (logs), Tempo (traces) and Pyroscope (profiles), plus alerting, incident management, synthetic monitoring, frontend observability and machine learning features. It is built around open standards: Prometheus and OpenTelemetry. Read more in our LGTM stack guide.

Pricing model differences

How do Grafana and Datadog pricing compare?

The pricing models differ more than the list prices.

  • Datadog charges per host for infrastructure and APM, plus usage for logs, custom metrics and other products. Costs can rise sharply with container density, high-cardinality custom metrics and log volume.
  • Grafana Cloud charges by usage: active metric series, log and trace volume and users, with a free tier. Teams can control cost by managing cardinality and retention, and by sending verbose logs to cheaper storage.

In our experience, organisations with large log volumes, many custom metrics or Kubernetes-heavy environments often see the biggest cost difference. Model your own usage before deciding. See our guide to reducing observability costs.

The pricing models differ more than the list prices.

When is Datadog the better choice?

  • You want the fastest possible time-to-value with minimal configuration
  • Your team prefers one vendor for monitoring, security and APM
  • Your environment is moderate in size and cost is not the main concern
  • You do not want to manage any observability infrastructure decisions

When is Grafana Cloud the better choice?

  • You want to avoid vendor lock-in and standardise on OpenTelemetry
  • Observability costs are growing faster than your infrastructure
  • You already use Prometheus and Grafana and want to stop self-hosting
  • You need data residency options or a hybrid deployment
  • You want to query existing data sources without moving all data

Can you migrate from Datadog to Grafana without downtime?

Yes, with a parallel approach. Instrument with OpenTelemetry, send telemetry to both platforms during transition, rebuild critical dashboards and alerts, validate, then switch off the old platform. No forced rip-out is required.

Parallel migration with OpenTelemetry

How Crozaint approaches the decision

Crozaint's observability practice is built on Grafana Cloud, delivered in an 8-week engagement that ends with your team owning the platform. We use OpenTelemetry for vendor-neutral instrumentation, so you are never locked into any single backend, including Grafana.

We do not force a rip-out of existing tools. Migrations run in parallel, and we will tell you honestly if your current platform is the right fit. Grafana Cloud is a commercial product, not pure open source, and we are upfront about that in every engagement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing list prices instead of modelling real usage
  • Migrating without OpenTelemetry, recreating lock-in
  • Switching platforms but keeping the same noisy alerts
  • Underestimating dashboard and alert migration effort
  • Ignoring team skills and training needs

Conclusion

Datadog wins on immediacy. Grafana Cloud wins on openness and cost control. Whichever you choose, standardise on OpenTelemetry so the decision stays reversible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grafana cheaper than Datadog?

Often, but not always. Grafana Cloud's usage-based pricing can be significantly cheaper for environments with many hosts, containers, logs or custom metrics. Datadog can be competitive for smaller, simpler environments. Model your actual metric series, log volume and trace volume to compare accurately.

Is Grafana a full Datadog alternative?

Grafana Cloud covers the core observability use cases of Datadog: metrics, logs, traces, profiles, dashboards, alerting, synthetics, frontend monitoring and incident management. Some specialised Datadog products may not have direct equivalents, so compare the specific features your team uses.

Does Datadog support OpenTelemetry?

Yes. Datadog can ingest OpenTelemetry data and supports the OpenTelemetry Collector. However, some Datadog features work best with its own agent. Using OpenTelemetry as your standard instrumentation keeps your options open regardless of backend.

Is Grafana Cloud open source?

Grafana Cloud is a commercial managed service built on open-source projects such as Grafana, Mimir, Loki, Tempo and Pyroscope. The underlying projects are open source and can be self-hosted, but Grafana Cloud itself, and some of its features, are proprietary.

How long does it take to migrate from Datadog to Grafana?

It depends on the number of services, dashboards and alerts. A focused migration for core services, run in parallel to avoid gaps, can be delivered in around 8 weeks. Crozaint's observability engagement covers audit, build, operationalisation and handoff in that timeframe.
